It was in 1976 , when the number of Malayalee families in Melbourne , Victoria, had grown to about thirty, that , need for a social organisation of the community was felt desirable.

From informal discussion of a group of families gathered at Royal Park , Parkville ( Near the Melbourne Zoo) on April 1976 and appointed Mr C.O. Thomas as a coordinator for organizing the Malayalee Group’s activities . There was a strong desire out of those one or two get together of Malayalee community to feel they were part of a common heritage having a unique culture and history with roots in the southern tip of the Indian peninsula and this was to be achieved by establishing a social identity here in Melbourne.

In 1977 the Malayalee group’s first get together was enthusiastically supported by every family in organising the entertainment part of the function , and also all families had a share in preparing a sumptuous feast for the occasion . And every one who attended the function enjoyed it immensely .There was feeling of a “ COMING HOME “ , a sense of togetherness and belonging, it was the first time we had so many familiar faces and new faces together in one place in Melbourne. When the idea of establishing an Association for the community was proposed at this function it was enthusiastically supported by all.

Thus the Malayalees of Melbourne and neighbouring districts met at Middle park Anglican Church hall in1977 December and decided to form an Association to be named “ Malayalee Association of Victoria. “ which was intended to provide a forum for the furthering of their social and cultural interests. The Malayalee Association’s Mini constitution written by Dr A. P John who came here to do his Doctorate at Monash University with help of C.O Thomas and Dr Marar. The written draft copy unanimously passed by the members who came there to celebrate the Christmas party at Middle park Anglican Church hall.

The Association is meant to provide a suitable forum for discussion of our common interests and a stage for the demonstration of the talents . In 1978 the Association conducted the Onam celebration at Princes Hill High school very grandly on Sunday after noon with Onam Sadhya and followed by the cultural Programe , (Small comedy skit, Mappila Pattu, Villadichan pattu, Group songs etc. ) It was great success with total audience 110 including children . The Salute goes to the performers Dr A.P. John. Dr Fredy Daniel, Dr Sarath Chandran, C. Joy, Hitler David, P.S. Joseph, Joy Omman , C.O Thomas , Tom George , Joy Alexander , C.V.Samuel , Sally John, Santha Joy , Aan Thomas , etc.

In 1979 The Malayalee Association conducted the first Malayalam Drama , Cross belt at Monash Union theatre . The staging of Malayalam Drama has encouraged some members to pursue their interests and develop their talents even on a professional level . More than 72 people witnessed the two and half hours drama and appreciated .it was great success . After that The Association performed more than 9 dramas and Musical evening in a different venue in each year .

Over the years the standard and participation in the entertainment programes have very much improved . Apart from occasional games and sports associated with the annual functions some of our members and children have organised themselves into a cricket team which play matches on a regular basis at Monash university ground under the leadership of Dr Fredy Daniel The Association purchased Four Malayalam Movies Kadal palam . Ara nazhika neram Iruttinte Athmav , Vilakku Vangiya Veena etc from Kerala and showed at Princes hill high school for the members and Also Karatte classes , Malayalam classes conducted in every Sunday at Wesley Church hall in Box hill for our children . A mini movie production started in 1982 by the members due to the technical problems and other financial difficulty could not succeeded their efforts .

What ever we have achieved in the past have been made possible by a succession of our Senior members and their families who have devoted their efforts to plan , organise and conduct the various activities Our Association has always provided a fully democratic forum for the expression of the ideas and interests of every member and as such we should accept the democratic processes and the results that ensue.
